Over the past couple of years, I have become an advocate in the criminal justice space. I began my journey of advocacy when helping one of my siblings who was incarcerated for some years. I was already studying for my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, so this was up my alley. Throughout their journey and my journey, I gained and learnt a lot of information from college, first-hand experience with my sibling, other individuals teaching me the ropes, other ins and outs, and through trial and error. Being an advocate is not an easy job! I saw the highs and lows of different situations play out. As I advocated for my sibling, we began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. They were closer to the light and on their way home. As of today, they are free and at home, beginning to live life again as a productive citizen in society.
My journey with advocacy doesn’t stop there, there is more to be done. I have another loved one who is dear to my heart whom I am advocating for next. I must say each case is very different, and different actions are to be taken to get things moving and shaking. People advocate in various ways, i.e., protests, walks, calls, writing, and so many other ways. I chose to start by getting their story heard by our elected officials in hopes that they would dig deeper into the case and see all of the mishaps and corruption that took place. We are going to be OPTIMISTIC about this.
This is just the beginning! We will keep fighting until JUSTICE IS GRANTED for MY LOVED ONE, then on to the next loved one’s case. If it takes one case at a time, that’s what I will do.
I have plenty more to fight for, not just my loved ones, but for all who are behind those walls.
Until the next time,
